Acer with 3D laptop for gamers
Posted by Gadget_Guy in Computers, Technology, Videos on December 8, 2009

.
Acer’s latest laptop aims to offer something new to videogame and movie enthusiasts: equipped with a 3D screen and glasses, the AS5738 is specifically designed to deliver 3D multimedia and it’s also capable of translating standard 2D media content into the third dimension.
The AS5738 uses TriDef 3D technology, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses. The idea is to give users a unique media experience, not just with specifically developed media and software, but also by taking standard content such as pictures and last-generation videogames and processing them appropriately to add the illusion of depth.
The 15.6″ HD display is coated with a special film that allows LCD technology to render images stereoscopically when users are wearing the included 3D polarizing glasses. The TriDef software suite includes everything from a media player for displaying pictures and video to an “ignition tool” that can convert all programs built on DirectX 9 and above without the need for a special graphics card. Of course, the AS5738 can also be used as a traditional laptop, by turning the “3D” mode off.
The AS5738 sports Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphic card with 512MB of dedicated memory and 5.1-channel Dolby Home Theater audio for an immersive media experience. Also included is a high-resolution webcam, multi-gesture touchpad with lock button to prevent accidental input, and two touch buttons for quick file backup and reducing energy consumption.
- Acer AS5738 Technical specifications:
- Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor (2 MB L2 cache, 2.2GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
- 4GB of DDR2 1066MHz RAM
- 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
- 15.6″ 1366×768 resolution, LED-backlit TFT LCD display with integrated TriDef 3D screen
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 512MB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM and up to 1792MB of shared memory
- 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
- Multi-gesture touchpad
- Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
- 6-cell Li-ion battery (4400 mAh)
- 6.16 lbs, 15.1×9.9×1.5″
The Acer Aspire 5738DG 3D notebook will be available starting suggested retail price of US$800.

Open your Mercedes with your iphone mbrace app

hughes mercedes door lock
Hughes Telematics recently announced its partnership with Mercedes-Benz on the automaker’s new line of “mbrace” mobile telematics solutions. The system, which connects mbrace-equipped vehicles with an app installed on the user’s Apple iPhone or RIM Blackberry, allows people to lock and unlock their doors, contact roadside assistance, get in touch with a local dealer or find their vehicle in a crowded parking lot. It’s a relatively trick technology that we spent some time with at the LA Auto Show, and there’s plenty of potential on the horizon.
Although the functionality is pretty basic so far, it’s seamlessly integrated with the vehicle and covers the most essential elements of telematics setup.
The user logs in and enters a pin (required every time you use the app for security and safety reasons) and then can choose between three tabs:
- Vehicle: Lock and unlock doors, vehicle location and assistance
- Dealer: Contact a local dealer or find one nearby
- Account: Manage your account with M-B, make payments, etc.
The interface on the iPhone is decidedly more sexy than the Blackberry – no surprise considering the age of RIM’s OS – but both systems work as advertised and the potential for expansion is easy to envision.
Hughes representatives hinted at the possibility of diagnostic, maintenance reminders and a summary of daily driving information (mpg, fuel efficiency, miles traveled, etc.), along with integration with the vehicle’s navigation system to find preferred routes to and from a location based on traffic conditions. Nothing revolutionary, but that’s not what it’s about – it’s about integration. The rest will flow as the systems get more complex and assimilated into the vehicle’s internal systems. Naturally, there’s plenty of talk about lifestyle applications, covering music, messaging, note-taking and other seemingly simple programs currently available on most smartphones.

Stantum Slate PC with Multi-Touch Panel Hands On
Posted by Car_Guy in Computers, Gadgets, Technology on November 28, 2009
Masaki from Stantum Japan gave me a tour of their multi-touch screen technology showcased on their Slate PC proof of concept device, which if you remember, is a modded Dell Mini 10.
I came away quite impressed with the technology – it seemed very responsive and sensitive to the touch, more than some of the touch screens that were showcased at FPD 2009. But what do I know, my experience with touch screens is pretty limited to Kohjinsha netbooks. There’s support for 10 points on the screen, with any sort of device – fingers, fingernails, stylus, glove or.. paintbrush as you will see in the video. Not that you’ll even need 10 points for a tablet PC usage scenario but it’s quite important for other industries where Stantum is involved in.
