Electric car batteries with 500-mile range on the way

battery 500 miles

The project is progressing with its goal of boosting the range of rechargeable batteries for all-electric cars to 500 miles.

The Battery 500 Project recently held its kickoff meeting at IBM’s Almaden Laboratory in San Jose, Calif., where leading scientists, engineers and other experts brainstormed about how to perfect the power source for all-electric automobiles. (See the video.)

As a part of IBM’s 2-year-old Big Green Innovations program, the Battery 500 Project aims to boost the range of rechargeable batteries for all-electric cars from less than 100 miles today to as far as 500 miles. The consortium’s efforts are being led by the Almaden Lab in collaboration with several U.S. universities and the Department of Energy’s national labs.

“Batteries technology has improved, but is still far inferior to gasoline in terms of how much energy they hold,” said Spike Narayan, a key IBM researcher. “The energy density—which is the amount of energy a lithium-ion battery stores per unit weight—is really not enough to produce a family-sized sedan with a 300- to 500-mile range.”

Table and Tennis was an idea to merge beautiful design for work and play

table tennis table

table tennis table

What is this?

We no longer work solely in the office, play in the game room, or eat in the dining room. Work, live and play have morphed together. There is a need for furniture to continue being beautiful, but to have multiple functions, and better serve the behaviors of todays world.

Table&Tennis was an idea to merge beautiful design, with a conference / dining table and build it to the official specs of a ping pong table. It’s built so that it can transition simply and instantly between the different uses.

Big thanks to Hong Kong Procurements for building the table, Douglas Ljungkvist for taking these photos and James Cooper for housing the first table in his office at Saatchi and Saatchi.

RCA Airnergy Charger Harvests Electricity From WiFi Signals – CES 2010

rca wifi charger

This thing is, seriously, the highlight of CES for me (so far) this year. 3D TVs and eBook readers are fine, but there’s nothing amazing about them.

The Airnergy Charger is amazing.

This little box has, inside it, some kind of circuitry that harvests WiFi energy out of the air and converts it into electricity. This has been done before, but the Airnergy is able to harvest electricity with a high enough efficiency to make it practically useful: on the CES floor, they were able to charge a BlackBerry from 30% to full in about 90 minutes, using nothing but ambient WiFi signals as a power source.

The Airnergy has a battery inside it, so you can just carry it around and as long as you’re near some WiFi, it charges itself. Unlike a solar charger, it works at night and you can keep it in your pocket. Of course, proximity to the WiFi source and the number of WiFi sources is important, but at the rate it charges, if you have a home wireless network you could probably just leave anywhere in your house overnight and it would be pretty close to full in the morning.

DXG readies first 3D camcorder

DXG 3D cam

Someone was bound to offer a 3D camcorder, but who would have thunk it’d come from pocketcam maker DXG? We got a gander at this pistol-grip, dual lens stereoscopic 3D View model, due in June. It shoot only VGA standard def 3D video, but what do you want for just $400?

Believe it or not, that $400 isn’t just for the camera. You also get a 7-inch digital video viewer. The 3D in both the camcorder’s 3-inch 3D LCD viewfinder LCD and the frame look almost holographic. For what it is, footage actually looked pretty cool. The video is in Motion JPEG, a pretty standard file format, but you likely won’t be able to view the 3D footage on anything other than the DXG panel.

Equally cool, or cooler, are three other new 2D HD cams, the DXG-A85 HD (March, $300), the DXG-A80V HD ($250, on sale tomorrow), and the DXG-590V HD ($200, end of February), which solve a vexing problem: you want to shoot at low resolution for easy upload to YouTube or other social media sites, but you want HD for posterity. All three of these models shoot two versions, HD and QVGA, simultaneously and stores two separate files.
