Retinal Prosthesis – Helping the blind to see again

retinal

We are developing an optical system for a parallel delivery of information and energy to tens of thousands of pixels in the implant. This system permits normal eye scanning to observe a large field of view, as opposed to “hard wiring” of a video camera to the retinal stimulating array using a single emitter-receiver link. The image from a goggles-mounted video camera is processed in a portable microcomputer and then projected with a pulsed IR LED-LCD array onto the retina. The retinal implant has an array of powered photodiodes converting pulses of light into pulsed electrical current using a power from an intraocular photovoltaic battery.

The leading cause of blindness in developed countries is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), which results in severe and irreversible loss of vision for over two million Americans. The disease causes deterioration of the photoreceptor cells in the central part of the retina, and currently, there is no cure.

The new TV remote: Using your hands – Touchless touch screen

remotetv The new TV remote: Using your hands – Touchless touch screen

The TV remote control of the future isn’t an expensive device with an LCD screen and blinking lights. It’s your hand.

The classic TV remote control most of us have grown up with has been around in essentially the same incarnation for half a century. It’s been tweaked over the years, but now one company is looking at ditching the remote altogether and using a camera mounted below a TV screen that senses hand motions instead of button pushes. The result is something that seems right out of Minority Report.

But the high-tech user interface Tom Cruise coolly manipulates onscreen isn’t even all that far-fetched now, thanks to incremental improvements. Until now, the most innovative new input for entertainment in the living room has been the Wii-mote, the motion-sensing remote control/wand that has made Nintendo’s game console a cultural phenomenon. Swing it like a tennis racket and you can pretend you’re playing tennis, point it at the screen and use it like a mouse to navigate menus.

Televisions have progressed as well, with better picture quality and capability. Now TVs can record TV shows, stream Netflix movies, check the weather, read news headlines, and skim RSS feeds. The menus on those TVs appear more and more like what we see on our computer screens, so a new interface that operates more like a mouse seems almost inevitable.

G.E.’s Breakthrough Can Put 100 DVDs on 1 Disc

dvd hybrid

General Electric says it has achieved a breakthrough in digital storage technology that will allow standard-size discs to hold the equivalent of 100 DVDs.

The storage advance, which G.E. is announcing on Monday, is just a laboratory success at this stage. The new technology must be made to work in products that can be mass-produced at affordable prices.

But optical storage experts and industry analysts who were told of the development said it held the promise of being a big step forward in digital storage with a wide range of potential uses in commercial, scientific and consumer markets.

“This could be the next generation of low-cost storage,” said Richard Doherty, an analyst at Envisioneering, a technology research firm.

The promising work by the G.E. researchers is in the field of holographic storage. Holography is an optical process that stores not only three-dimensional images like the ones placed on many credit cards for security purposes, but the 1’s and 0’s of digital data as well.

The data is encoded in light patterns that are stored in light-sensitive material. The holograms act like microscopic mirrors that refract light patterns when a laser shines on them, and so each hologram’s recorded data can then be retrieved and deciphered.

Holographic storage has the potential to pack data far more densely than conventional optical technology, used in DVDs and the newer, high-capacity Blu-ray discs, in which information is stored as a pattern of marks across the surface of a disc. The potential of holographic technology has long been known. The first research papers were published in the early 1960s.

Many advances have been made over the years in the materials science, optics and applied physics needed to make holographic storage a practical, cost-effective technology. And this year, InPhase Technologies, a spinoff of Bell Labs of Alcatel-Lucent, plans to introduce a holographic storage system, using $18,000 machines and expensive discs, for specialized markets like video production and storing medical images.

To date, holographic storage has not been on a path to mainstream use. The G.E. development, however, could be that pioneering step, according to analysts and experts. The G.E. researchers have used a different approach than past efforts. It relies on smaller, less complex holograms — a technique called microholographic storage.

A crucial challenge for the team, which has been working on this project since 2003, has been to find the materials and techniques so that smaller holograms reflect enough light for their data patterns to be detected and retrieved.

The recent breakthrough by the team, working at the G.E. lab in Niskayuna, N.Y., north of Albany, was a 200-fold increase in the reflective power of their holograms, putting them at the bottom range of light reflections readable by current Blu-ray machines.

SAVE YOUR HOME WITH BARRICADE FIRE RETARDANT GEL

cabin gel

The Wildfire Threat The threat of wildfire is a major concern to more and more homeowners as construction of homes moves into the Wildland Urban Interface. Periods of drought are frightening times for residents of suburban and rural areas across the country.

For those of us who live near natural areas of brush or forest the dry seasons are especially hazardous. Experts advise us to plan firewise landscapes of widely spaced plantings (at least a 30 foot radius of ” Green Zone” around the house), keeping dry combustible plant debris cleaned up, and maintaining low, well-watered ground covers and lawns.

But there is a further step we can take to stop wildfire from destroying our property.

Keep Barricade Fire Gel on hand! Click here to view and order products now.

Barricade Fire Gel has saved thousands of homes in the United States and abroad, earning the gratitude of property owners globally.

Barricade is now available to homeowners who can apply the water/gel coating on their own property in front of an approaching wildfire, before retreating to a safe area. When mixed with water at the end of a garden hose, super absorbent polymers in the gel concentrate trap water molecules and suspend them in millions of tiny “bubblets.” Sprayed onto the flammable surfaces of roofs, windows, eaves and walls of a house, vehicles, or propane tanks, a “wet blanket” wrap of Barricade can be applied up to days (with rehydration) before an approaching wildfire. Homeowners can evacuate safely, and firefighting resources can be focused on the wildfire rather than on the already protected structures. Barricade can be washed off with plain water after the fire danger has passed.

One Homeowner’s true life experience with Barricade®
My son spotted the smoke. Winds of 40 mph were gusting in every direction. We raced home. By the time we pulled into the driveway, the flames were already licking the top of the hillside above our home.

Burning BuildingI quickly broke out the Barricade, and I will tell you the truth, my hands were shaking. My fifteen year old son and I were able to get the gallon jugs attached to garden hoses and began to spray down the home. I started on the propane tank, while my son hit the side of the house nearest the flames. While I was spraying the tank, I heard two explosions in rapid succession to the west of us. One neighbor’s propane tank had blown and a car’s gasoline tank had exploded. Those two homes were lost to the flames.

It took about 30 minutes for the two of us to get the home covered. The Barricade coated all sides of the house, including the windows and the eaves. My son got our pets into the Jeep, which he drove to a safe location across the street.

Then the winds shifted. The flames came racing in, driven by 45 mph gusts. I attached three garden hoses together and went out into the brush that surrounds our house. It’s mainly sage brush and cheat grass, and the flames were moving fast.

Thick smoke made it hard to breath. I laid a line of Barricade down in a trench I had dug the previous year to divert rain and snow runoff away from the back of the house.

The winds continued to blow and the fierce brush fire exploded down the hillside. When it reached the line of Barricade— it stopped cold! The winds fanned the flames to the west of us and over past the neighbors’ homes but the fire never made it past the Barricade gel I had laid down in the dried-out brush.

Our whole family breathed a sigh of relief. The flames had come within 50 feet of our home! The photos I took afterward show the dramatic power of the Barricade to stop the flames. I don’t believe I’ve ever had so clear a demonstration of the effectiveness of the technology behind a product. Nor a more timely one!

No More Tripping Wires – Flat extension cords / tape

postline1 No More Tripping Wires – Flat extension cords / tape

No More Trippin Wires

The thing with extension cords is that they look ugly and the wires are a prime accident zones for tripping. There is nothing Elegant about them! Unless you’re looking at the “Post Line”, this one’s a gorgeous concept that makes full use of the circuit-printing technology and electrostatic paste material. Use it from point A (gadget) to point B (wall socket) by sticking it flat to the floor, and if it becomes less sticky and grimy, simply wipe it clean and its sticky flat extension cord tape again!
