Table and Tennis was an idea to merge beautiful design for work and play

What is this?

We no longer work solely in the office, play in the game room, or eat in the dining room. Work, live and play have morphed together. There is a need for furniture to continue being beautiful, but to have multiple functions, and better serve the behaviors of todays world.

Table&Tennis was an idea to merge beautiful design, with a conference / dining table and build it to the official specs of a ping pong table. It’s built so that it can transition simply and instantly between the different uses.

Big thanks to Hong Kong Procurements for building the table, Douglas Ljungkvist for taking these photos and James Cooper for housing the first table in his office at Saatchi and Saatchi.

Heatherwick Studio Rolling Bridge in Grand Union Canal London

rolling bridge

rolling bridge

Heatherwick Studio’s Rolling Bridge is located within a new residential, office and retail quarter set around part of the Grand Union Canal.

Rather than a conventional opening bridge mechanism, consisting of a single rigid element that lifts to let boats pass, the Rolling Bridge gets out of the way by curling up until its two ends touch. While in its horizontal position, the bridge is a normal, inconspicuous steel and timber footbridge; fully open, it forms a circle on one bank of the water that bears little resemblance to its former self.

Twelve metres long, the bridge is made in eight steel and timber sections, and is made to curl by hydraulic rams set into the handrail between each section.

The Rolling Bridge opens every Friday at noon and won the 2005 British Structural Steel Award.

Rippling ribbon staircase – not your normal design

ribbon stairs

ribbon stairs

ribbon stairscase

The concept of a delicate rippling ribbon was chosen in view of the exposed position of the staircase in the main living area of the house. The staircase is constructed from 10mm thick sheet metal. Pairs of adjoining steps connected with an oblique external side joist form a bracket anchored in the wall. Each of the brackets is constructed as a rigid frame. The higher steps bear mainly drawing forces, while pressure is transmitted through the lower steps.

La Roche Chair – Unique Chair Design

la roche chair

la roche chair design

From Milla Rezanova, comes the new “La Roche Chair” concept, with a shape that has the ability of making you stop for a minute and analyse it in detail. Sustained mostly by its outer “cloak”, the chair almost seems like it’s floating, making it hard for one to imagine it is actually stable and connected to the ground. Its look is not only interesting from the front, but no matter how you place it, there is something original to be discovered, whether it is a special angle, a line or just the mix of colours. With a refined elegance, it suits well in a classic, “black and white” interior, but also in a rebel one, personalizing the place, because, overall, it seems to have an identity of its own.
